Manaslu Expedition Highlights (2025/2026)
The Manaslu Expedition is one of the most popular high-altitude climbs in the Himalayas, second only to Mount Everest in terms of height, standing at 8,163 meters (26,781 feet). Located in the Gorkha District of Nepal, Manaslu offers a slightly less crowded but equally challenging alternative to Everest. The climb provides a blend of rugged terrain, cultural immersion, and Himalayan adventure.

Here are the key highlights of the Manaslu Expedition for 2025/2026:

1. Expedition Overview
Location: Manaslu, Nepal
Elevation: 8,163 meters (26,781 feet)
Route: The expedition typically follows the Southwest Face route, which is the standard route for summiting Manaslu.
Duration: 6-8 weeks (approximately 45-60 days), with trekking, acclimatization, climbing, and descent phases.
Best Season: Autumn (September-November) and Spring (March-May). The pre-monsoon spring season is particularly popular due to more stable weather and optimal climbing conditions.
2. Phases of the Manaslu Expedition
Trekking to Base Camp (10-12 days)
Arrival in Kathmandu: Your expedition begins in Kathmandu, where you’ll prepare, meet your guides and team, and finalize permits.
Trek to Base Camp: The trek to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800 meters) takes around 10-12 days. The route follows the Buri Gandaki River through remote villages, offering a rich cultural experience as you pass through Tibetan-influenced villages.
Highlights: Views of Mt. Manaslu, Lho La, Sringi Himal, and Ganesh Himal. The trek also offers cultural experiences in villages like Soti Khola, Machhakhola, Namrung, and Samagaon, with Buddhist monasteries and traditional Sherpa culture.
Base Camp to High Camp
Base Camp Setup: After reaching Base Camp, climbers spend 3-4 weeks acclimatizing to the altitude and preparing for the climb. Base Camp is equipped with tents, food, and support staff, including Sherpas and porters.
Acclimatization: Climbers will make several rotations between higher camps and base camp to allow the body to adjust to the thinning air. These acclimatization climbs are crucial to ensure safety at higher altitudes.
Camp I (5,800 meters / 19,029 feet)
Route: After leaving Base Camp, the first stretch of the climb takes climbers to Camp I, which is situated on a glacier just above Base Camp.
Challenges: The terrain consists of rocky sections, snowfields, and moderate technical climbing. Climbers will use fixed ropes and ice axes to navigate the glacier and steep sections.
Camp II (6,400 meters / 21,000 feet)
Route: The route from Camp I to Camp II involves a steep ascent and is usually set up along the glacier, with fixed ropes for support.
Camp II Features: It’s located on a rocky ridge with spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers. Climbers will stay here to rest, acclimatize, and prepare for the final push.
Camp III (7,200 meters / 23,600 feet)
High Camp Setup: Camp III is positioned on the Manaslu Ridge, and the climb here involves a mix of rock climbing and navigating ice fields. It’s the last resting spot before the summit attempt.
Challenges: Climbers face difficult conditions as they prepare for the summit push. This includes climbing the rocky upper slopes, battling the high-altitude environment, and dealing with thinning oxygen.
Summit Push
The Final Ascent: The push for the summit from Camp III involves climbing the upper section of the ridge, which is steeper and more exposed.

Summit Ridge: The final ridge to the summit is sharp and technical, requiring careful navigation, especially in unpredictable weather.
Summit Day: Climbers typically leave in the early morning hours, aiming to reach the summit by noon to avoid the dangers of afternoon storms. It can take 6-8 hours from Camp III to the summit.
The Summit (8,163 meters / 26,781 feet): Reaching the summit of Manaslu is a remarkable achievement. From the top, climbers are rewarded with views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Ganesh Himal, and the other surrounding peaks in the Manaslu range.

3. Descent and Return to Kathmandu
Descent: After the summit, the descent is often the most dangerous part of the expedition. Climbers retrace their steps back through the camps, carefully managing exhaustion and the risks of altitude sickness.
Return Trek: After reaching Base Camp, climbers trek back through the villages to Arughat or Soti Khola, then return to Kathmandu. This trek typically takes another 7-10 days.
Celebration: Once in Kathmandu, climbers often enjoy a celebratory dinner and a chance to reflect on their achievement.
4. Key Features of the Manaslu Expedition
Less Crowded, Stunning Views
Fewer Crowds: Compared to Everest or Annapurna, Manaslu is less crowded, offering a quieter, more immersive climbing experience.
Panoramic Views: The summit of Manaslu offers stunning panoramic views of surrounding peaks, including Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Ganesh Himal.
Cultural Experience
The Manaslu region offers a rich cultural experience as it is home to ethnic groups like the Tibetan-Buddhist communities, especially in villages like Samagaon and Bihi. The region is also rich in Buddhist monasteries, stupas, and prayer flags.
Technical Climbing
Technical Aspects: While not as technically demanding as Everest or K2, Manaslu still presents significant technical challenges, including the glacier sections, rocky ridges, and the summit push.
Fixed Ropes: Climbers will rely on fixed ropes for sections of the climb, especially between camps and during the summit push.
Crevasses: Navigating crevasses and ice-falls, particularly on the glacier section, is part of the challenge.
5. Cost of the Expedition
Price Range: The cost of a Manaslu expedition varies widely depending on the operator, route, and level of support. Prices typically range from $20,000 to $35,000 USD per climber.
Inclusions: Costs typically cover permits, climbing gear, Sherpa support, food and accommodation during the trek, and Base Camp services.
Optional Extras: Some expeditions offer luxury services, such as high-end accommodations, private guides, or helicopter support, which will increase the cost.
6. Preparation & Fitness Requirements
Physical Fitness: Climbers need to be in excellent physical condition, with experience in high-altitude trekking and technical climbing. Preparation should include strength training, endurance activities, and acclimatization hikes.
Experience Required: Previous experience on other 6,000-7,000 meter peaks is recommended, but not strictly necessary. Training and preparation are key for a safe ascent.
Acclimatization: Adequate time should be spent at Base Camp and higher camps for acclimatization. Climbing high-altitude peaks requires a solid understanding of altitude sickness and how to manage it.
7. Safety and Risks
Altitude Sickness: Like any 8,000-meter peak, altitude sickness is a major risk. Climbers should be prepared to descend if symptoms occur.
Technical Risks: Due to the technical nature of the climb, falling ice, rockfalls, and crevasses are potential dangers. Climbers should be prepared for these challenges.
Weather: Weather can change quickly in the Himalayas, with storms, high winds, and freezing temperatures common, especially above 7,000 meters.
Conclusion
The Manaslu Expedition is a challenging but immensely rewarding adventure. It offers a blend of technical climbing, cultural experiences, and breathtaking views of the Himalayas, all while being less crowded than other 8,000-meter peaks. Whether you’re a seasoned mountaineer or an experienced climber looking for a new challenge, summiting Manaslu is an unforgettable achievement.

Manaslu Expedition ~2025/2026 Overview

The Manaslu expedition is an adventurous climbing expedition to the 8th highest mountain on the globe known as Mount Manaslu with a proud height of 8,163 meters. Mount Manaslu resides in the government-protected region of Manaslu Conservation Area in the mid-western region of Nepal. The Manaslu Mountain climbing is more technical and challenging in comparison to Cho-Oyu so climbers should have excellent mountaineering training and experience.

The Manaslu expedition begins by following the trekking trail of Budi Gandaki valley leading to Samagaon. The climbers make their first camp for acclimatization at 4600 meters below the Manaslu Base Camp. The next camp is made at Manaslu Base Camp at 4750 meters. The climbing of Mount Manaslu to higher elevation needs to follow the cane marker pointers using fixed ropes for crossing the bergschrunds.

The next high camp is made at 5700 meters at the bottom of the North Peak. The High-Camp2 is made at an altitude of 6400 meters and High-Camp 3 is made at 6800 meters just below the col. The climbing continues further higher at camp 4 at 7400 meters which is the last high camp of our expedition. The climbers after high camp 4 follow a 6 hours climbing trail to reach the summit and make camp there. The climbers have to pass through the moderate slope to climb towards the summit along with the pyramid slope. The climbers then traverse for around 70 meters using fixed ropes leading towards the summit. The climbers after successful ascend to summit return to base camp and pack for home.

How much does the Manaslu peak expedition cost?

How difficult is Manaslu summit?

Manaslu Difficulty Level: Intermediate to Advanced. Manaslu is a revered mountain and the world’s 8th tallest peak. At 8,163m (26,781 feet) and standing entirely within the Nepalese Himalaya, it’s a step back in time in a remote valley of western Nepal.

Starting from the fact that Manaslu is an 8-thousand meter mountain, it is obviously going to be difficult. Climbing it is only intended for seasoned mountaineers and of course, technical skills including glacier trekking, using crampons, fixed ropes, and other climbing equipment is necessary to tackle this challenging yet rewarding peak.

That said, the main challenge on Manaslu is the altitude and it is one of the easiest 8-thousand meter climbs after Cho Oyu, with lower avalanche risk than other mountains of similar altitudes
